ECWC Qtr Fin 2nd Leg - Dinamo Tbilisi 0 - 1 West Ham (1981)
With Chelsea and Arsenal heading to that part of the World soon.. reminds me of our game in Georgia... Anyone go? 80,000 there apparently - Remember lots of soldiers in uniform watching it and Pearson with a late winner IIRC

This is all the footage I could find - Looks like something from the 1940s!

Troy - official club trip - Irons Travel Club. Stansted to Moscow to Tibliisi. Snowed in for a night in Moscow.

The stadium was like a huge bowl and we got a standing ovation as we walked in. Friendly people.

I was at the home 1st leg and we had a very good side that was send to winning. Tiblisi totally took us to the cleaners & gave us a footballing lesson. I was amazed that we won the 2nd away leg after that. They went on to win a rather boring CWC final 1-0 as I recall.

rubble - weren’t the crowd about 90,000? Typical west ham, winning out there!

Blimey, I sort of remember that Dennis getting hold of diff tickets. He was on the newcastle train (petrol-bomb game) amongst others.

I went with my mate Norman. Great trip.
Drank the hotel dry. Champange worked out at about 20p a bottle. Went from freezing our nuts off in Moscow to sweating our cods off in Tbilisi. We had about 300 there.

They came to UP as an unknown quantity as the Russian season was shut for the winter break whereas they knew all about us.

Just to show that things don't change; tickets for the League Cup replay against Livrpool went on sale while we were away and we had to beg the Travel Club manager - Dennis(?) - to put some aside for us to buy when we got back!

Remember watching the home game from the westside when that long range shot went in it looked not far from the halfway line. Can't think of many better strikes or performances at UP from an away side. I clapped them off with everyone around me. We had a very good side then, beat Arsenal in the 80 cup final and unlucky to lose 1-2 to the mickeys in the league cup final replay that year, but they literally played us off the pitch.

I have the programme (away game) but didn't go. they were brilliant at Upton Park, though we now know several players were drug assisted.

I got there late and the queues were massive didn't look like I'd get in and I hadn't missed a game for a few seasons. So paid Ł25 to a tout front Row West Upper.

They was way too good and we weren't bad at the time

Our fans were a different class that day,

I went to the first leg - they were bloody excellent.

At halftime there were a few boos were I was, but the booers were quickly quickly told to shuddup.

And then the ovation at full time.

I've never heard of any other supporters doing that - class of our own, we are

I went to the first leg and although we made defensive errors to concede a couple of their goals, overall they were far superior and fully deserved the standing ovation they received at the end to a still full Boleyn ground.
That was an ovation that I've never seen given to any other team and you could see that the Tibilisi players were quite stunned by it as they took some time to leave the pitch.
By the way, my brother went to the 2nd leg, but there was no way I was going all that way for a forlorn hope.

We weren't hugely out gunned in that first leg, it was a simple case of our mistakes and their excellent finishing.

4-1 flattered Tiblisi

Also to remembered we were a Division 2 outfit despited a number of top class players.

Yep David Kipiani. I was at that home leg and this bloke was simply stunning on the night. He sadly died in 2001 but rightly has legendary status over there.

Stuart Pearson got us a little consolation with the goal out there but that Tbilisi team really did deserve the phrase "different gravy".

Kipiani resembled one of the Super Marios if I remeber correctly? He definitely played like one.

Little did we know back then that it was the end of any European / domestic trophies and here we are some 40 years later still waiting :-(
